Person of Interest episode 20 SPOILERS
JOHN, FOR A SUPERSPY YOU ARE BETRAYED A LOT. (although in a way, I suppose that's sort of the point - he isn't a superspy, he's a soldier who trained to be a spy, but even as a spy, was still a soldier, since his job apparently was Stanton's helper, enforcer, and generally not ask questions)
also, Stanton alive! and it looks like she is NOT HAPPY with Snow. hee. (although I doubt show will get rid of Snow too quickly, so he'll probably talk his way out of it)
I'm trying to wrap my brain around Alicia being involved and what the actual plan in china was and who disrupted it. I think I need to watch it again.
So Stanton "pseudo-dies" in 2010? And was off the grid (as Root?) since. Reese and Snow appear to believe she's been dead this whole time. Snow would believe that Reese shot her and then the LZ was taken out, in theory taking Reese out as well (that much of his plan I understand), and then when Reese reappeared later on, Snow knew the missile strike or whatever it was had failed to kill him. So he wants Reese dead because Reese can out him as a traitor I presume.
Jessica called Reese also in 2010 in some kind of trouble and, presumably, died shortly thereafter when John couldn't go back to help her. :( So he makes his way back to the States, finds out she's dead, which would be bad on its own, but this is at the same time as he's been betrayed by his job and his partner. So the result is, job trying to kill him, partner tried to kill him (whereas he didn't do it to her - so to him, she must have believed the lie that he was a traitor), and he failed Jessica and she ended up dead. So basically, his life is suddenly worth nada, and that's where the spirals in rage and guilt starts.
Also in this episode:
Fusco was pretty awesome. John got shot -- and almost got shot at least twice more. VERY LUCKY OUR BOY. (though I like how he talked his way out of Ashley's attempt. He relies on his physical abilities, but he's pretty smart, too)
Carter didn't do a whole lot, but that was a great moment in the hospital when she comes to help Reese. I don't even ship them (I don't not ship them either, but I'm content with where they are right now) and that was FANTASTIC.

ALSO. Is it wrong of me to think that Stanton knows about the Machine? Because that IS what the guy she killed was saying. Of course, maybe it's just a coincidence that the same terminology is being used.

No, I think it's the same Machine. Alicia's presence pretty much makes that clear I think. What is less clear yeah, is whether she knew a little too much about it or not. because if she did know, then I think she could've been working with the people who came earlier and was planning to take it for herself. It was left out a bit too conveniently. If that's true then shooting John was trying to cover her tracks. She just didn't realize that Snow was onto her/them and had the airstrike ready.
So my problem is we don't know her motivations yet. If we take the flashback parallel literally, then Stanton knew exactly what she was doing the whole time, and was playing her partner and everyone else for fools, as Ashley did. But it might be more of an emotional parallel, since John feels she betrayed him, it's just a question of degree. So in conclusion, I DUNNO. :)
