I finally watched last year's Christmas Special for Doctor Who (though in hindsight I probably should've saved it for a little while since it's a couple of long months... )



Aside from the weirdness of watching a holiday thing when it's not Christmastime, there were some things that struck me --

-- okay the ADORABLENESS OF THE PONDS DRESSING UP FOR THEIR HONEYMOON PLAYTIME, LOLOLOL
- and of course their terrible bad luck of trying to take a honeymoon 'cruise' on a crashing ship.
- then wondering if Melody is already conceived on the TARDIS on the way to the cruise, or after ...
- and also they took their costumes with them! POOOOOOONDDSSS

Okay and the continuing gag with the broken sonic and half of it being inside a FLYING SHARK. seriously, Moffat's brain is a wonderful place.
(and afterward I was imagining the weird-ass version of Santa/Father Christmas story this planet is going to develop, with a flying sleigh pulled by a giant shark, and little fish to make presents like elves, a singing angel... Think about those stories for a moment, and... the Silence are probably not as wrong as we would like them to be.)

But the main thing that struck me, as the River/Eleven shipper I am, was:

- the main story about Abigail and her dwindling days and how that mirrors both Eleven and River. That he knows that his days with River are ultimately numbered, just as Abigail's were, because he knows how it ends, (and so does she, or at least thinks she does)

- But I think that as much as Scrooge learned his lesson, so did Eleven, at least somewhat. that also means that he can start to let her in, and not be miserly with her days because in the end it hurts only him. I'd have to rewatch but at least it feels like S.6 River/Doctor, he seems to be a lot more open to having feelings for her. Obviously part of that is that he just doesn't know her that well yet or trust her, but, otoh, if she did tell him his name in the Library, that's a very good basis for knowing there will be more, but at the same time, knowing how it ends, knowing it'll be cut short, it's also easy to try to push her away. But after this, starting with IA, he seems more open...

It's a bit odd to think that not long after this the Ponds get dropped off back home, and then they get the blue envelopes, and Impossible Astronaut starts... *sigh* (which is why the criticism of God Complex that he was pushing them out wasnt quite fair, I thought. yes, he was, but otoh, they weren't ONLY living on the tardis the whole time anyway. They already HAD a separate home, it was only the envelopes which brought them out anyway. Plus they were home AGAIN after AGMGTW. They were short/part-timers, already. So yes, he was pushing them out and being kind of a jerk about it, but it wasn't as if they didn't already have lives there, y'know? )

- oh, and also, Matt Smith remains brilliant with kids. i think because he himself really is secretly only twelve and even better at playing old than we think



And also I watched most of the George Harrison documentary produced by Martin Scorsese, Living in the Material World which is really pretty fabulous for music lovers. Some fascinating interviews and a lot of archival things that nobody's ever seen before. I am amazed that people like Tom Petty and Eric Clapton look better NOW than they did when I was a teenager. Just shows you what getting clean does for your health.

Aaah, excellent thoughts about the Christmas ep in context with Eleven/River! :D I feel like rewatching it. (But mostly for flying Christmas shark, heeee.)
