Besides being Cinco de Mayo, today is also Boys' Day in Japan. More modernly it's called Kodomo no hi, Children's Day, but it is traditionally a day set aside for boys. (Girls have their own). So today, we fly the Koinobori, the carp flags, in hopes that our son will grow up to be as strong as a carp.
And we display our miniature samurai helmet, armor, and weapons, so that he'll be a fierce warrior, like the great samurai general Kintaro was as a child (in legend, he rode a bear and other such strange and wonderful feats). Or if not a warrior, at least in hopes that he might not sit on his butt and play computer games all day long.
(ETA: spellling corrected, thanks! That, alas, is what you get for taking Wiki's word for things and not actually, y'know, looking it up properly. My husband's third generation J-American, so he's a long way from a native speaker. And yes, that's my rugrat! (g))

Hey Two of our best friends (mixed couple) had a baby daughter last weekend (Jacklyn), we are going to visit them next weekend and see the baby. We are friends with three mixed couples and they all had daughters. I see a trend.
