In honor of a very special occasion, which is kidlet getting out of preschool for a month of vacation (which means highly reduced online time, btw, since I won't be able to get online during the day very often), I watched Stargate Continuum in my few hours of freedom today!
In brief: YAY!
weird,I always feel like I should watch it again so I have something a bit more substantive to say, but--
Time travel wacky hijinx! Hellish alternate universes! Teamy goodness! SG-1 woo hoo!
And Baal being a bad-ass, but Qetesh being even badder! (I'd say 'worse', but that's not quite what I mean *g*).
Also, it's beautiful. Those polar scenes are gorgeous - nothing like reality, really. Especially in Blu-Ray High-def. *SLURPS SCREEN to lick up all the gorgeousness*
Interesting story, with some some unexpected things despite my somewhat spoiled status (I knew what was going to happen, but not how, IOW).
Alternate Earths will never NOT be cool - especially how they all seem to get destroyed when SG-1 even gets involved. *snicker*
Let's see, random thoughts:
- General O'Neill and, even better, colonel O'Neill. I was a little disappointed he (Alt!O'Neill) didn't go with the team. I understood why (both inside the story and the meta reason) but still... would've been nice. It was great to see some of the Jack-that-was, as opposed to Modern Jack who I find amusing enough in small doses, but it gets really tiring. And you can't know how much it pains me to say that -- I mean, it's JACK! But, yeah. shut up Jack.
- Sam was really rockin it this ep. And she and Cam were very effective partners.
- Daniel - do you think you could be JUST A LITTLE bit upset when Jack's dead on the floor, maybe? (and how awesome was that scene?) But his phone call to 'himself' was priceless.
- First Prime Teal'c! interesting how Baal played on his sympathies to free the Jaffa to get him to serve. Which he did and clearly was very good at. Always fun to see Scary!Jaffa Teal'c again. Love the faceoff with the team in russia - nice callback to CotG.
- Landry. This confirms to me that Beau Bridges' forte is being a hard-ass. It's when he's trying to be all soft that it comes off as smarmy - whereas hard-ass feels way more natural. Brilliant take-down of SG-1, I gotta say. Kind of the flip-flop of what Janet tells him in "Ripple Effect", in fact, and so satisfying for that, too.
- Henry Hayes is made of awesome, and I'm so glad William Devane came back. That was unexpected.
- Ba'al rules all. That is all. ;)
Well, okay, I lied. not all. HAWT. clever. Clever enough to get Teal'c on his side by stringing him alone with the Free Jaffa (and hey, nothing like the sweet smell of success to a Jaffa too - Baal's future knowledge let him plow over his enemies. Now That's what you do with time travel!)
NOt quite clever enough to stop Qetesh once she made her move after being at his side for 15 years. (which is kind of funny really, because either Baal was very worried about VALA or Qetesh was a whole lot scarier than I ever thought. She didn't seem like that big a player, certainly the Tok'ra seemed to have no compunction about going in and taking her out, unlike their usual fears of shifting the balance of power). Camulus "donating" half of Australia to the Free Jaffa - lol.
- I'm rather grieved that's the last Baal though. Of course, that's the easiest thing in the universe to handwave, but still. I should be glad the host is free, but, I'm not.
(how much do I want to a do a meet up with Baal and Malek using my Asheron-verse backstory? oh, yesssss).
NITPICKS AND BITCHING:
- Since when do Tok'ra have a fucking homeworld? Or monks? I think I'll say that it's actually a friendly planet they settled on after the Goa'uld defeat that was already occupied by monks. Because a homeworld makes no sense, at all. But a three hour ritual of reciting Baal's crimes? That, I believe. (how much do I wish they'd brought back one of the Tok'ra we actually know? C'mon, Sebastian Spence was probably available)
- how do you extract an actual LIVE symbiote through the forehead? Though I actually like this better than the surgical procedure in 'Dominion', which always seemed desperately primitive.
- glad as I was to see Colin Cunningham's cameo... DUDE IS STILL A MAJOR? Doesn't he have to be promoted or get out of the service at some point? Who'd he piss off in D.C.? Poor guy - stuck at Major for *counts* NINE YEARS? I'm going to pretend otherwise, because that's just ridiculous.
Temporal mechanics, or me working it out in my head:
okay, so Baal-Prime goes back in time, stops the gate (tries to destroy it, but isn't quite succeessful) thereby creating a new timeline, goes back through the gate, and proceeds to conquer the galaxy using his knowledge of what the other system lords are going to do for the next sixty years. In 2008, SG-1 comes through that same gate to find the Earth is not that much different except there's no stargate program. President Hayes and Co think they're right but have zero interest in destroying the timeline just to make Sam and Cam and Daniel feel better. One year passes. Baal is now in charge of everything and orders the attack. Baal-Prime dies. blah blah. Cam goes back to 1929, lives out ten years and sails on the Achilles where he stops Baal-Two, who dies there. Cam-Prime lives out his life in '39. Which, okay, they're not quite the same timeline anymore, but close enough. That new timeline propagates forward, leaving us but without Vala disappearing.
Sadly Cam-pRime can't be secretly Daniel's dad, because he didn't exist in our Daniel's verse, but still,it would be hilarious.
TIME TRAVEL MAKES MY HEAD HURT. but I think it works. I'd probably think it through better if it wasn't so late.
I may edit when I think of more, but that's it for now.
The bad thing about the DVD and the leaked copy is that everyone's reactions are all spread out. :( I'll go read some of the earlier ones that I skipped, but please, if you've already seen it or after you watch, feel free to talk. I feel like I missed out on some of the discussion!
And also, I'm writing SG-1/Dark Knight Sam Carter-Bruce Wayne kicking-ass-together fic based on MY OWN PROMPT from the porn battle. It's sort of pathetic to write your own prompt, isn't it?

Heh, I'm glad I wasn't the only one bewildered by Daniel's lack of reaction... and then the whole "I'm your best friend!" thing? Really, Daniel? Oh you're so weird and bitter.

Exactly! I gotta say I was surprised that SG-1 even thought that Landry would be on their side in this new world.

You'd think Sam at least would remember "Road Less Traveled" Landry. But I suppose by that time they were just desperately reaching out for anyone who might believe them and get them out of three days of interrogation. Which he did, just not in the way they wanted. But yeah, why they thought ANYONE would want to erase their own timeline to restore SG-1's, was both arrogant and naive, exactly as Landry said. They would've done better to keep that part to themselves until they figured out what was going on a bit better.

Ba'alPrime is the one who went to 1939, then go back and rule the universe... (I would say the 50 years comment is workable since it's mre than 50 years since 1939 when Ba'al came to Earth. And it's also Ba'alPrime who step out from the Gate & killed by our Mitchell.. because Mitchelll went back 10 years earlier, he had time to be there to kill Ba'alPrime (and his plan)---> that means the alternateuniverse never happen.

Yeah, Baal was around all that time; it's clear he lived forward from 1939, using his knowledge of the future to KICK ASS. Of course, he also had to whack the Baal actually living in that time (or possibly they worked together). And the rest I agree with - except the timeline at the end is NOT the same one they started with, not exactly, because there was no Mitchell the first time around. But it's like the fish in Moebius, that sort of minor change apparently didn't ave any long term repercussions.. Poor Mitchell-Prime though. knowing he can't fuck anything up for the rest of his life.

YES.YES.YES.YES.
LOVED Qetesh. Loved Baal. Great flick all-in-all, even if it could have used a little more Sam/Jack at the end there. :P
