or, Chuck vs Reaper
Both star under-achieving dudes who work at big box stores (at a Best Buy clone in Green and a Home Depot clone in blue), both guys get stuck in worlds they didn't exactly want to be (spies and being the devil's bounty hunter), both discover they have super-powers, and both are resigned and perhaps a bit more ambitious at the end with the rest of their life.
Now, Chuck is at a bit of a disadvantage since I didn't actually see the first twenty minutes and it was yesterday. And it'll continue to suffer that same disadvantage, since I hardly ever get to watch an 8 o'clock show. But it's amusing. In its favor are Adam Baldwin, who just can't help enliven his scenes, and the Spy Girl who's basically our hero's handler by the end. I like her and I suspect from the tidbit at the end she's going to be far more ambiguous a character.
Reaper is... classic Kevin Smith, albeit it's on the CW so there are a lot fewer uses of 'fuck'. I like his films generally (Dogma? Awesome. The Golden Calf!!! *snorfle*) and this takes a lot of the good bits - dialogue and absurdity mixed with a genuine touch of awww... Plus, Ray Wise as the devil is perfect (though I have a great fondness for John Glover as the devil in Brimstone- that was inspired. There'd be no Lionel Luthor without that show). If you think this is 'Brimstone' well, only in concept - in execution they're nothing alike. This is the love child of Buffy, Brimstone, and Dogma.
And how long until Missy Peregrym's Andi finds out? I give it three episodes until she's part of the Scooby Gang.
"Your mother and I sold your soul to the devil." I'd be a whole lot less forgiving, I gotta say.
I enjoyed both and I'll continue to watch, even if I doubt I'll be fannish about either one.
And in other news, HEROES is back! Yay! Can't wait to see where they're going with Volume 2...

From the article I read, I got the impression that the pilot was pretty much perfectly written... that Kevin Smith didn't necessarily add/create scenes of his own. Or did he? I loved the armoring up scene, particularly the waiting for the dirt devil to recharge.
Diversity? *laughs cynically* dude, apparently the US and Canada don't have enough white people, now we have to import them all from the UK.
Bwah. That's hilarious... and so sadly true.

Chuck's concept seems to be a little more open-ended and I can see it going a full season without much difficulty. But Reaper, I'm much less sure of where else they can go with this idea, other than "chase the bounty of the week with
Scooby Gangslacker friends." But, no sense in borrowing trouble yet, I guess.
