Had to think about this one for awhile, but it's a cool subject. I've had the chance to see many recent film costumes in person, so those are the ones I'll list.

1. Sauron, in LotR. This is a very hard costume to actually see in the film because he's on-screen only in the prologue, for about five seconds. But hands-down it is the single-most freakin' impressive costume I have ever seen with my own two eyes. Not only is the armor (some sort of plastic, I presume, but metallic looking) just a wickedly cool design, but the surface of the entire thing is decorated with ornate filigree. You can't even see it in the film (though you can see it in the toys and the statue) but it's there.

2. Queen Elizabeth, Shakespeare in Love. "the peacock dress" One in a long line of beautiful gowns, it's simply stunning far away, and up close when you can see the bead-work and such fanatical attention to detail, it's mind-blowing. A dress fit for a queen. Or Judi Dench, which is the practically the same thing.

3. Amidala, Attack of the Clones. Of the many impressive costumes for Padme, my favorite is the summer dress she wears first going to the lake. It's a lovely flowing feminine gown, in shades of pink and yellow, off the shoulder. I think I saw it at the Dressing the Galaxy exhibit, which is awesome.

4. Satine, Moulin Rouge. Anything Satine wears, but especially the blue dress. Because it's a costume the character wears, it's doubly a costume. And it's sparkly! But I don't think my arm would fit where Nicole Kidman's waist goes... yikes.

5. Jack Sparrow, PotC. It's the most iconic costume of recent years I think. It's a riff on basic 'pirate', but it's also Jack Sparrow. Captain Jack Sparrow. heh. (Elizabeth's wedding dress from the second movie is also amazing, for something we only see wet and bedraggled...)

And for something else, here's a list of costumes I just like from my various fannish (t.v.) things.

1. Aeryn's dress in "Human Reaction", Farscape. [livejournal.com profile] mrsdrjackson already picked the leather, damn it. *g*

2. Baal's entire wardrobe *g* (you knew I'd get that in someplace, right?) in SG-1. I'm especially fond of the "Stronghold" suit with the beige long-coat.

3. Sinclair's Entil'Zha outfit from "War without End" (Babylon 5). It's the basic Ranger outfit with a hooded coat/cloak, but I love it. Seeing anyone else in it later, is WRONG.

4. The brown Tok'ra uniform, seen first in "Allegiance". Because the Tok'ra rock, Malek rocks, Jacob rocks, and I like that it's more tailored than the desert version. Plus, it seems to come without silly headgear...

5. Six's little red dress, BSG. That dress IS the show.
