Kat had to choose someone. The question was just why she picked who she did. If they'd left in that part about Helo being afraid of going out into the radiation, then it might have been a pity thing. But I'd rather give her a more noble and farsighted motive. And yeah, Kat's storyline's done, so we'll never know for sure.
