I just wonder because they were taking the kids/teens away for the war, but I wasn't altogether convinced there was a war and not just getting killed to feed the Dark One's power. it just seems a little oddly connected. Maybe it's just meant to be thematic, and show how far he falls, but it occurred to me that there could be some actual sacrificial magic thing going on. And maybe Rumple is 'doing a kindness' doing it with babies since then their parents are 'spared' later. Or something like that.
Or what you said instead. Which makes more sense, but you know, I have to make everything complicated. :)
