We're opting for the wee acoustic guitar ourselves.
I know you're looking for something more "real" but a while back we got our guy this hilarious "cat keyboard" that really has tempo control, various synthesized beats, and can record a long string of notes *and cords* (many of them just do individual notes). I was pretty impressed for a cheap Target toy. Anyway, my overzealous and energetic kiddo has been pretty good with it, and right now he's really enjoying recording his music and listening to it.
All of this is to say "Go for it!"
Haven't watched the BSG trailer. Honestly, I'm not that excited about the next season, so maybe I *should* watch to get more excited/nervous...
