Ha, trust the engineer to ask how! :) the guide at the bottom had come loose, so there was nothing to hold it from swinging laterally when I tried to pull it closed (it hangs and rolls from the top). And when it swung, only a little bit of sideways motion was needed to let it slip off the track above and fall.
