At first, there was way too much exposition. This is an issue of mine, especially at the beginning of long stories. I usually mark it in blue as something for getting rid of later, but to make sure the same information is somewhere else first. Otherwise, I've been known to take out what is rather ... important. Because, after all, I know it, so it's in there. Right? er, not always.

The second try was constantly interrupted and it's all chopped up and non-flow-y. grr.

But anyway, this particular scene is annoying because it's fundamental to the emotional arc of the WHOLE STORY. This is, essentially, the first crack in a rather elaborate facade, and it has to be in just the right place and in the right way, or (to continue the metaphor), the piece is going to break in the wrong place. And we can't have our characters breaking in the wrong place, can we? No, because then they find comfort from the wrong person, and that's JUST NOT DONE.

Anyway, it's been fun to work on my own stuff for the last few days. I love prompts and ficathons, but this one is SO much more ME.

Which is probably half the reason I'm so reluctant to finish it and let it go in the wild. It's like a giant personal Lizardbeth fanfic fetish all in one place.

I got a book in the mail for this story, and Mr. Liz raised his brows when he saw it, but smart man, asked, "This is for fanfic, isn't it?" Just because I have a personal library on refugees, torture, and PTSD because of this story .... (not to mention period costumes, pre-modern technology, Byzantine urban planning, early US Colonial history, and etc. ad infinitum for other projects, both original and fanfic)

How much do non-fiction authors (and amazon) make from fanficcers doing research, I wonder?

And lastly... though not as gratuitous as you might think:

GIP.

The best thing to come out of my attempt at the interests collage.
