So long and thanks for all the fish
I'm both appalled and amused by the irony: the SAME week The Cove won Best Documentary Feature, not far from Heal the Bay and some offices of the Sea Shepherds...
... wait for it...
The Feds busted a Santa Monica high-end sushi restaurant for selling whale sushi.
It is completely illegal to trade in whale in the US (some limited hunting by native Alaskans is permitted, but not the sale of any part). Genetic testing proved it was a Sei whale, a deep-water baleen whale. It was almost certainly taken as part of the Japanese "whale research" program. Funny how their research tends to end up at the Tsukiji fish market.
And some ASS decided we need whale SUSHI here. I just wish they could arrest the dicks who ordered it, too, thinking they're being daring special snowflakes ordering illegal exotics off the menu. Man, that attitude pisses me off.
BONUS TRIVIA (things I have learned reading my kid's books):
A few years ago, some Alaskan hunters found a Bowhead whale with a harpoon head buried in it that was a hundred years old. Yeah, that means that whale was somewhere around 115 years old. And there's another one with a possible age of 130.
