The reason I fail at NaNo type things...

Crackfic should not require MATH. I mean, it's gotta be some kind of avoidance mechanism that I start looking into the physics of wing!fic, right? (because, hello, crack!fic - not the most "possible" thing in the first place).

However, I now have the proof that some of it is actually possible, assuming really big frakking wings. Much to my surprise I figured out that the wing load (ratio of mass to the wing area) would be on the high side, but similar to large birds like swans and cranes. Wing load helps determine air speed, which would probably be a healthy 40 mph. Takeoff would be difficult to get enough lift (I could only find an equation for fixed wing aircraft - but taking a duck and hang glider as models he'd need at least a running start).

(we will not discuss the anatomical problem. There's only so much I can do. *handwaves vigorously*)

For my own purposes (since it's currently on the back of an envelope... *g*)

M = 82 kg
Wingspan = 16 ft = 4.9m
Area ~ 64 sq. ft.
W(s) (wing load) = 13 kg/m-2 = 130 N/m-2
g = 9.8 m/s-2)
takeoff speed = sqrt (2g*13/air density*Lift coefficient) {air density ~ 1.2 and CL estimated at about .5 for at least one kind of bird) = 12 m/s. Or about 25 mph. so, er, they're really GOOD wings, yeah. *handwave some more*)

Despite all this delay, I do have at least a few more words added to the fic, yay!

(eta: I did heaps of not-very-relevant research into nuclear fallout for last year's Yuletide, as well. I'm just that kind of fic-writing-avoidance geek!)

LOL, so do they both have wings? Is there sexing in flight? (WHAT? You said crack!)

what, you want me to give it ALL away? :P

If they're angel wings, I don't think normal physics really matter.

they're not, but it certainly doesn't deserve all the attention I was giving it!

*giggles like a small child* That is WAY more skience than I put into mine.

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
you don't have the same level of fic writing avoidance I do, obviously!

That is so very not true. I have far too many tabs open on ontd_p right now, for instance.

so, the lesson of the day, kiddies? THE INTERNET IS BAD FOR FIC WRITING. *nods*

Yes! Yes, exactly. I should be writing. *prods brain*

*giggles* This is like me spending eight hours researching first-time labor for my Kara/Caprica fpreg fic. Nice to know I'm not the only overly obsessive writer, even with crackfics.

Although, I got distracted yesterday for an hour or so trying to find all the Colonial cultural references for my fic, and ended up only needing Kataris and Nomian anyways. I made up for it today by writing 3400 new words in a single sitting. *is dead* Even with my research neurosis, my brain likes binge writing.

oo, 3400, go you! I did only about 1K in addition to all my frakking MATH. *grumpy* bah.
