Hasta La Vista, Baby

Stan Winston died yesterday.

In his honor, a mini picspam of some of his creations:

Neither of these franchises would be nearly as popular, I think, without the specific design of the monsters within them. For the Alien creature, Stan Winston (with Ridley Scott for the first film and Jim Cameron for the second) took HR Giger's aesthetic as a base and made it into a creature that could move, was distinctly alien, and ... MENACING AS HELL.

And also, because alien creatures weren't all there was, how about some cyborgs?

oh, yeah, T4 is in production AND there's a t.v. show (yay!) that still uses these basic designs Winston laid out TWENTY YEARS AGO.

Jurrasic Park, the Predator franchise, etc. onto the Crystal Skulls for the Indiana Jones movie, as well as the Iron Man suits most recently.

What a legacy.

He was gifted. Rest in peace.

Is it me or all the giants in the cinema world are dying?

alas, many of them are getting pretty old so it's pretty inevitable I guess, but still, sad.

I need to pay more attention to behind-the-scenes stuff. I heard yesterday that he died, but I didn't know who he was until now. Thank you.

Hubby is a HUGE fan of the Alien franchise and special effects technique in general, so I picked up a lot just through osmosis. But yeah, Winston was important in FX makeup and making creatures that weren't just men in rubber suits. He did some really interesting stuff.

We're losing too many good people in the industry at the moment :(

yeah, and unfortunately a lot of that same generation is just as old... :(

all we can hope is that a new generation can step into there shoes and carry their work forward.

Indeed, he made many of my best movie experiences possible.

*takes a moment*
