So while I listen to my OH-SO-EXCITING recordings (and iTunes keeps wanting to import them - no thanks!), I've been working on my Shagathon fic a bit. Just kind of playing with the scenes.

And it really wants to turn in to the Really True Story of How Helo Ended up Mayor of Dogsville and Zarek was Nowhere to be Found.

Unfortunately this has nothing to do with my prompt. bah.

Also, Zarek=Final Cylon? Anybody taking odds on it? I'm thinking the odds are pretty good. He's my new Number One candidate (at least for today...) He sort of slips around the edges, and he's been around from the beginning, but I've noticed people often forget to put him on the list of candidates, probably because he wasn't around much in 3.5. I am now VERY suspicious of that absence. It's like Ron's waving a flag "look over here! Ooo, Kara could be the final cylon,what do yo think of that? Isn't it cool? But pay no attention to the Vice President over there; he's really not important at all." uh huh. And I keep thinking of that moment when Head!Six leans on Zarek and tells Baltar to pay attention to him...

I am NOT avoiding anything by randomly theorizing, what makes you think that? :)

(I really have to get off line, though-- I keep getting sucked in and distracted. Off I go to someplace without net access again...)

Zarak huh? I like your reasoning. My only objections are that I feel like they need another woman, so it would be 7/5 instead of 8/4; and that I don't know if the audience is as invested in him as some other characters who might make a bigger impact. But then, that might go in the plus column too, if they don't want to make any more important characters cylons.

What are you getting re-certified for?

I think Ron knows he shot his wad with the GIANT SHOCKING SURPRISE of Tigh being a Cylon. No reveal is gonna top that. So the Final reveal isn't going to be a shock in that sense (hell, by 2009, Crashdown won't be a surprise to anyone in fandom). It's gonna have to be dramatic, but also make sense. And Zarek is one of the few that I think it will add resonance to his character and the series, where I don't think it'll add anything to have it be, say, Billy. Gaeta's also in much the same place as Zarek, though with AJ playing it up, he looks more like a red-herring every day.

I have days when I'm on the Dee or Kendra or Cain (my top three women picks) train, but the latter two don't really add anything to the series as a whole. For Dee I'm more conflicted, since then it might retroactively explain her attachment to Lee, which Ron knows was poorly grounded. It puts her in Anders' shoes as drawn to her particular object of shepherding (in this case Lee, or maybe even Bill), plus it would make Leoben right. But she wasn't on New Cap, she didn't hear the music, and she and Lee are apparently over, so I don't know how it would all fit together.

I wonder if the numbers aren't going to even out in the end. After all, the only Cylons I'm certain will survive to the end are Sharon and CapricaSix (not even Sam *sniff*). And that would have a nice unexpected tidiness if the numbers end up balanced. Well, that's how I would do it, anyway....

I like Billy and I wouldn't mind him coming back in something like a flashback, but making him the Final? Tory stole his slot, I think, and he ain't getting it back UNless Ron pulls something really spectacular out of his ass -and y'know, all things are possible ... *g*

Wanking the final Cylon is one of my favorite activities. :D

I am holding firm on the theory that it's Roslin. (It's that part of the Hybrid's babbling about Redemption that will only come thru terrible suffering that puts me in mind of her cancer.)

I think Zarek WAS in the second half of the season, but almost all his scenes got cut because they related to the Sagittaron storyline which was axed. (In which, I believe, Zarek would have turned out to be the big bad. That's one of the many reasons why I'm glad that storyline was axed.)

Of course, RDM is a known liar. Didn't he say "Starbuck is dead" in the Maelstrom podcast? ;)

I know! Final cylon meta-ing, it's a game that just doesn't STOP being fun. I change my mind... weekly maybe. Hee. Roslin isn't in my list, mostly because I think she's like Kara, one of those the Five are meant to guide and protect, not a Cylon herself. But yeah, narratively it could work. (I still like Kendra the best for the prophecy, but, eh, prophecy, *shrug*)

Yeah, I know Zarek was going to be in Woman king (I can't even remember if he ended up in it at all - I watch the shirtless Helo and that's about it for that ep), but whatever was cut, canonically it didn't happen. (See Hero for Ron's ability to twist canon to his own purposes... ) I'll be more dubious of my theory if all those deleted scenes show up on the box set, but until then... He wasn't in any other ep that I recall, and he wasn't at the trial, which was an odd absence.

There are certainly RL reasons for it - the dropped storyline, the expense of everyone else in Crossroads that they didn't need Hatch too, BUT when you're looking to retcon, it helps when there are these weird gaps. And Zarek was on New Cap, he formed the Circle, and he certainly worked himself in a position close to all the major players, etc.

Besides, Old Skool Apollo was my first t.v. boyfriend -- how cool would it be to have him be a Cylon? *g*

I hadn't considered Zarek much, but you might be right. It would be particularly interesting considering his terrorist past and considering the recent histories of at least three of the other final four.

that's part of why I like him -- he's sort of the dark reflection of Tigh. While Tigh was fighting for the Fleet all those years unknowing what he is; Zarek was fighting AGAINST the system. Both protecting a subsection of humanity, from his own point of view. Plus he formed the Circle, and he was on New Cap and would've been part of the resistance (we assume) if he hadn't told Baltar to stuff it and gotten thrown in jail (I'm ignoring the Sagitttaron dropped plot). We don't know if he did or didn't hear the music because he wasn't in Crossroads. He didn't make the Final Five tea party - but nobody else did either, and the other major living candidates were on the Galactica.

Any other candidate present on the Galactica at the time of the Tea Party almost HAS to be a knowing Cylon, because otherwise it creates a strange question for why he or she wouldn't have gone and been awakened too. And almost every other (living) candidate was on Galactica.

The only exception to this is Roslin because she did sort of flinch and she was busy with other Cylon things.

I have been thinking about this question and I really think thats it's either Dee, or someone we totally never though of.

Is the actor that plays Zarek even under contact?

It's very possibly Dee - which would answer some things, but raise other questions/problems. But there's NOBODY fandom hasn't thought of, y'know - there are lists out there with every single character on them, I'm sure. That's one reason I hate the idea of a really long mid-S.4 break -- all the details are gonna get dissected and ficced and spec

Hatch isn't a regular, if that's what you're asking, but I don't think that matters. I have no idea if he has a limited episode commitment, but he might have one of those anyway, cylon or not. As of the mid season break there's been no reveal, so the final cylon only has to show up for a limited number in 4.5, no matter who it is.

of course all this might be moot if the strike drags on too long. :(

Zarek=Final cylon? It had never occurred to me, but now that you mention it the conspiracy theorist that lives in my head is sure you are right. *g*

I'm kind of in love with the idea right now. He's like this stealth character -- everyone knows who he is, he's been around since the third freakin' episode of the show, and YET he's somehow not a candidate for a lot of people. very odd. Especially when he was ON New cap, he formed the Circle, and he attached himself to the RTF leadership - all things that people often cite about the Dylan Four.

And you know what would be really cool? If Zarek's a Cylon then Leoben was still right about "Adama is a Cylon" way back in Flesh and Bone, at least on a meta level. Because he WAS an Adama in a previous life.... "This has happened before and will happen again, anyone?" :DDD

ok, the idea of Zarek -- played by the original Apollo, and did I ever explain how that 2nd episode scene of Zarek and Lee talking about the name Apollo nearly FRIED my BRAIN -- being the final cylon...
that's just too much for my neurons.

OMG yes, Apollo was my very FIRST t.v. boyfriend. I remember most of the girls I knew who liked the show were all into Starbuck, but I liked Apollo the best. So I would LOVE for Zarek to be the final cylon (and I think Richard Hatch would love it too - and no one would pry it out of him with a crowbar either if he already has been told, unlike much of the rest of the cast who dribbles spoilers at the drop of a hat).
