Found in my effort to look up more info:
Here's an interesting satellite image of California showing the immense smoke plume offshore. And if you'd ever heard of the "Central Valley" of California, now you know what it looks like from way up there.

I'm using my spouse's ancient laptop, because his screen actually works. Mine still works but I can't write on it, with the little lines being so distracting. There are only five of them and they're so skinny you wouldn't think they'd matter - but they show up as colors on white (spread about two inches apart) and bug me. Dell piece of crap that immediately started to fall apart when the warranty expired. *grumpy*
And WaMu sucks for losing my money and then having such shoddy customer service. Number one among banks? Jeez, I'd hate to see what the worst one was like.

And my sympathies on the laptop. Mine's LCD screen just went wonky, though thankfully I'm still waranteed.
