REACTION POST TO X-Men First Class
OK SPLENDIFEROUS MOVIE. Erik wins all the things. And bb!Raven and Charles. And Erik and the leather jacket of unf. AND CHARLES AS RAVEN'S BROTHER.
the only thing I did not like was that I don't think they should have pushed erik so far at the end. He could've still left and still rescued Emma, but it felt like they pushed him to crazy-town. And THEN, the dorky outfit. The helmet alone was more than enough. we don't need the costume too. Too ridiculous for a movie that until then had done a fairly decent job of real-world explanations.
ok, not the only. Do none of these people know first aid? Erik removed the bullet, but no one thinks that maybe they should, y'know, try to stop the bleeding? (but, otoh, jfc, Charles, how stupid are you to say 'they're just following orders'? stick with the "innocent lives', young sailors, don't become a mass murderer...)
it kinda annoyed that they used Moira without using any of her background. She should've been named gabrielle Haller, who at least had the distinction of being around when Erik and Charles met in comics continuity and when they had their falling out, even if they used nothing else.
I also still can't stand diamond-powered Emma frost (it's become a symbol of everything I hate about how Morrison managed to make books I had enjoyed ones that I dropped after he came aboard.) And January Jones was surprisingly terrible. I am not one to usually complain about acting, but man. what the hell WAS that?
But those are really small complaints in the grand scheme of things. It had a story beyond "the origins of the X-men and the Brotherhood" and it was efficient about backstory and intros when it needed to be, but also slowed down to let both Erik and Charles and Raven breathe as characters.
I kind of love how Vaughn said fuck it if the continuity didn't match with the movieverse. it mostly matches, esp if you forget X3 and Wolverine exist at all, which suit me just fine. But the cameos were hilarious & perfect, and the jokes. hee.
But don't bother to wait til the end. There's no post credits easter egg. There was much booing in my theater on Friday, and I can't help but think it was a wasted opportunity. They should've had Charles meeting with Tony Stark's dad to get a new Blackbird, or played darts with Nick Fury. Or showed Jean being born. Or something fun anyway, even if it can't connect directly since it's set before the modern marvelverse movies.
THis post was also planned to be my Doctor Who post, but this has already sat in a tab long enough, so... post!
